Air Fryer Blooming Onion Recipe

🌼 Air Fryer Blooming Onion Recipe

🧅 Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia)
  • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Cooking spray or oil (for air fryer basket)

🔪 Instructions:

  1. Cut the Onion:
    • Cut off about ½ inch from the top (stem end) of the onion, then peel.
    • Place the onion cut-side down. Starting ½ inch from the root, make 4 cuts downwards (like a cross), then make additional cuts between those to get 12–16 segments.
    • Carefully spread the “petals” apart.
  2. Prepare Breading Station:
    • In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
    • In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk.
  3. Coat the Onion:
    • Dredge the onion in the flour mixture. Be sure to get the flour between all the petals.
    • Dip the onion into the egg wash, then coat again in the flour mixture.
    • Optional: Freeze for 10–15 minutes to help it hold its shape better.
  4. Air Fry:
    • Spray the air fryer basket with oil. Place a piece of foil under the onion if needed.
    • Set the air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
    • Cook for 15–20 minutes, spraying with cooking oil halfway through for extra crispiness.
  5. Serve with Dipping Sauce:
    • Classic dipping sauce: Mix mayo, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, and a bit of garlic powder.
